How to disable windows automatic updates in windows xp
1.Start-run
2.Type “services.msc”
service window-standard(Click on Standard)
3.search for Automatic updates-right click-properties-stop
apply –ok
or Right click-Properrties-select Disable from drop down

You didn't 'Stop' the service for updates which was already running. So without a restart you didn't actually change anything.
I stop update in control panel but didn't work
